In 1941-1943, during the Nazi occupation, more than 3,500 Soviet citizens-civilians, prisoners of war, partisans, and underground fighters-were tortured on the territory of the cemetery and the nearby concentration camp. In 1969, the Soldiers' Glory memorial complex was opened here. . The remains of Soviet soldiers who fell in the battles for Poltava were transferred here. In the center of the memorial is a triangular obelisk in the shape of a soldier's bayonet. At its foot is the Eternal Flame, lit by a torch brought from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Kyiv. Near the obelisk is a granite figure of a warrior with a shield. Next to the Eternal Flame are the graves of the secretaries of the Poltava underground regional committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine S. Kondratenko and H. Yatsenko, Lieutenant General O. Zyhin, war correspondents P. Lidov, S. Strunnikov, O. Kuznetsov, Hero of the Soviet Union Colonel M. Kucherenko, and others. To the right of the alley leading to the Eternal Flame are 4 group and 21 individual graves with granite slabs installed on them; on the back of the obelisk are 17 mass graves, where the remains of 394 Soviet soldiers who died in 1941 and 1943 are buried.
