The memorial complex was built to perpetuate the memory of the fallen soldiers, fellow villagers and liberators of Vovchyk. The losses of the villagers during the Second World War were significant. A total of 563 residents from the Vovchyk district (the villages of Vovchyk, Visechky, and Vovcha Dolyna) went to the front, 327 of whom were killed. In the first months of the occupation, the Nazis shot the head of the collective farm, Yurii Shostak, and 67 villagers. Vovchyk was liberated on September 17, 1943, and during the retreat the Nazis burned some buildings (a school, etc.).
