From 1979 to 1989, more than 350 residents of the city and Konotop district took part in military operations as part of the Armed Forces of the USSR on the territory of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. In 1989, a memorial sign was installed, which was a granite block of a rectangular shape on an inclined granite slab, which was installed on a low single-step brick stylobate. On the front side of the monument there is a memorial inscription, below it there is an image of a carnation. In the central part of the plate there is an image of a five-pointed star, and below it is engraved the name of the Hero of the Soviet Union: "Chepurny Volodymyr Mykolayovych". The names of the 12 dead are on the sides of the plate. In 2013, the object was reconstructed. In the square, a chapel was built in honor of Alexander Nevsky - the patron of the military, the central panel, to the right of which a monument and a commemorative sign were built. The monument to internationalist soldiers is a sculptural group. Behind the three figures: a paratrooper, a shooter and a sniper, a rock made of cement, stone and natural sandstone is placed. Three cranes are inserted above the rock. To the right of the monument is a rectangular horizontal pedestal lined with granite, on which are placed 12 commemorative plaques with photographs and personal data of fallen internationalist soldiers from Konotop and Konotop district. Inscriptions on memorial plaques from left to right. To the right of the pedestal, behind the commemorative plaques, there is a commemorative sign, in the upper part of which there is a dedicatory inscription, an image of a five-pointed star, two tulips and an afghan lady. In the lower part of the memorial sign there is an image of "eternal fire" and an inscription. The central panel, to which 14 steps lead, shows a globe, framed by a laurel wreath from below and the inscriptions "To the internationalists and peacemakers of Konotopshchyna", "Algeria, Angola, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Spain, Yemen, Iraq, Cambodia, China ", "Cuba, Laos, Mozambique, Mongolia, North Korea, Syria, Somalia, Hungary, Finland, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia."
