The first attempts to erect a monument in honor of the outstanding Kobzar in Kremenchuk began in 1922. Then a competition for the best design of the monument was announced. The victory in it was won by the work of the former chief architect of the city L. M. Shlapakovsky, but it was never implemented. In March 1989, a commemorative stele to Taras Shevchenko was unveiled.
In 1994, the symbolic first stone of the future monument was laid in another place - on the embankment of the Dnieper. And only 10 years later, in 2004, the sculpture was finally installed in the Jubilee Park.
