At the end of June 1942, the Putivl partisan unit moved to the Novoslobodsky forest. On July 3, 1942, the invaders surrounded the forest. Battles continued for three days, in which the invaders suffered significant losses. Enraged by the defeat, on July 7, 1942, the Nazis broke into Nova Sloboda. On that day, the Nazis burned 1,220 peasant yards, killed, tortured and shot 586 civilians, including 70 children aged 1 month to 10 years, 82 men aged 60 to 90, 255 women and teenagers. In memory of this tragedy, in 1971, a reinforced concrete sculpture of a grieving mother and a pylon crowned with a five-pointed star were installed in the center of the village on a concrete base. On the front side of the base, a board with a memorial inscription is attached, along the perimeter of the base - boards with the names of the dead. In 2004, a new one was erected on the site of the old monument in the form of a huge bell, crowned by a crown with a cross. In the middle of the bell there is a chapel in memory of the dead, and on the outside, in a circle, there are granite slabs with the names of the dead.
