In 1909, when the 100th anniversary of the writer's birth was celebrated, in the village of Velyki Sorochyntsi, they decided to erect a monument to the outstanding compatriot. Funds were taken not only from Poltava Oblast, but also from various parts of Ukraine and Russia. The author of the project was the famous St. Petersburg sculptor I. Ginzburg. The monument was inaugurated in August 1911. It is interesting that it was built not far from the house of doctor M. Trokhimovsky, in which Gogol was born in 1809.
