The monument was erected in honor of the Dynamo Kyiv football players who participated in the 1942 Death Match. "The "Match of Death" was a match between the Kyiv team "Start" (officially: the team of the Kyiv "Khlibzavod", composed of players from the pre-war Kyiv football clubs "Dynamo" and "Lokomotiv") and the German team "Flakelf" (a mixed team of Luftwaffe amateur football players and air defense anti-aircraft gunners) on August 9, 1942, at the Zenit Stadium, 24 Kerosynna Street. It was named the "death match" after the war thanks to Soviet propaganda. A granite ceiling relief with four figures of football players (Mykola Trusevych, Ivan Kuzmenko, Oleksii Klymenko, and Mykola Korotkykh) carved into it.
