The first brick tombstone on the grave was built in 1839 by a friend of the poet, Poltava teacher S.P. Steblin-Kaminsky. To the 100th anniversary of the birth of I.P. Kotlyarevsky, a new monument was erected on his grave in 1869, but it has not survived either. In 1898, to the centenary of the publication of the first Ukrainian book "Aeneida", a tombstone was erected based on a drawing by the artist V.O. Volkov and the model of the sculptor L.V. Posen. On the eve of the 200th anniversary of the poet's birth, the grave was rearranged: it was framed by a granite border.
