The initiative to erect a monument to the victims of the Baturyn tragedy of 1708 in Baturyn belongs to Viktor Yushchenko, then a People's Deputy of Ukraine. The project was undertaken by Vyacheslav Kyrylenko and the All-Ukrainian Youth NGO "Foundation for Support of Youth Democratic Initiatives", which he headed. The grand opening of the Monument to the victims of the Baturin tragedy of 1708 took place on April 10, 2004, on Holy Saturday before Easter. At its foot, the remains of the victims of the Baturin tragedy, found during archaeological research in the central part of the city, were reburied.
