In preparation for the 15th anniversary of Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi's death, a district commission to honour the writer's memory was established in Chernihiv. The chairman of the commission was F. Vilenskyi, later S. Mahdiichuk, an employee of the Regional Executive Committee, and the secretary was M. Vainshtein, director of the Chernihiv State Museum. The commission announced a competition for the best design of the monument to M. Kotsiubynskyi and organised a fundraising campaign among the population of Chernihiv oblast. They raised 1,782 rubles, and the Regional Executive Committee allocated 3,000 rubles. Several projects were submitted to the commission by the Kyiv Art Institute, but they were rejected due to lack of funds. Subsequently, the project by the artist V.G. Krychevskyi and the architect A.F. Kostyrko was accepted. The monument was unveiled on 17 September 1930, the day of the 66th anniversary of the writer's birth. The monument was made by craftsmen from Volyn and was a light grey granite monument in the shape of a pyramid made up of four separate blocks. The words were engraved on the monument: ‘Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi 1864-1913. From the workers of Chernihiv region in 1930’. In 1955, a new, current monument was erected on the writer's grave.
