9 (10) soldiers who died in the battles for the capture of the city on February 21, 1943 by units of the 100th Rifle Division of the 40th Army and on August 19, 1943 by units of the 52nd Rifle Corps are buried in the grave. At the time of the installation of the monument, the names of 3 soldiers were known. In 2013, the names of other soldiers buried in the mass grave were clarified (through the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation): Vasily Fedorovich Borodin, Alexey Porfirovich Lisitsyn, Dmitry Makarovich Lykov, Valentin Konstantinovich Pozdnekov, Stanislav Ivanovich Sukharevsky, Nikolai Smorodsky, Semyon Fedorovich Yarikov.
