In May 2022, members of the Kyiv City Council decided to remove memorials related to the culture and history of Russia and the USSR from Kyiv's public space.Among them is the monument to Vatutin in Mariinsky Park.
In December, it was reported that Kyiv was initiating the removal of Soviet-era monuments.
On January 25, an expert committee met at the ICIP to consider the Kyiv city government's proposal to remove the status of cultural heritage sites from the monuments to Vatutin and Chkalov.
The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy recommended that the Kyiv City State Administration dismantle and relocate the monument to Soviet General Nikolai Vatutin.On February 9, a monument to Soviet General Nikolai Vatutin was dismantled in Kyiv. On February 10, a part of the pedestal on which the sculpture of Vatutin stood was dismantled in Mariinsky Park.
