The monument is located in Shevchenko Park, opposite the Red Building of Kyiv University. It was erected on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the poet's birth. It is one of the symbols of modern Kyiv. The monument often hosts public gatherings, rallies of various political forces and social movements. A number of cultural events are traditionally held near the monument to Kobzar. In particular, every year, the People's Shevchenko Prize is awarded at the foot of the monument.
