From September 18 to October 8, 1941, the first line of defense of the city by Soviet troops was located here. The defense was held by units of the 21st Army under the command of General Y. Cherevichenko, the 2nd Cavalry Corps of General P. Belov (North-Western Front) and the First Rifle Division of General I. Rusiyanov, which was the first in the Red Army to be awarded the rank of Guards. On September 26, 1941, Soviet soldiers - artillerymen of the 1st Division of the 6th Guards Mortar Regiment under the command of Captain B. Kyslytskyi and Commissar, Senior Political Engineer K. Yunak, opened fire from Katyusha rocket mortars for the first time on this part of the front. In 1965, an obelisk was installed at the place where the first line of defense of the city and the command post of the 40th Army was located. It was replaced in 1976 by a Katyusha-type BM-13 rocket mortar mounted on the chassis of a ZIS-58 car and installed on a rubble base. a stone on which a cast-iron board with a memorial inscription is fixed.
