The square is located on the territory of the city cemetery, which was destroyed during the Soviet regime. In 1970-1980 of the last century, the oldest city cemetery of Ivano-Frankivsk was almost completely destroyed. The probable reason for the destruction of the graves at that time could be the burial of 143 Sich Riflemen, as well as participants of the "Polish" Uprising of 1831 and the January Uprising (1863–1864). After that, the cemetery was closed and turned into a public square. In 1982, the square was reconstructed into a memorial square, the surviving graves were restored, and memorial plaques were installed. The second reconstruction of the memorial square took place in 2002, during which the Assumption Chapel of the UGCC was built on its territory.Of the many thousands of burials, only a few have been preserved, among them:
L. Bachynskyi (1871 – 1930) - head of the delegation that signed the Act on the recognition of both parts of Ukraine on January 22, 1919 in Kyiv;
D. Sichynskyi (1865-1909) - a famous Ukrainian composer;
M. Goslavskyi (1802-1834) - a Polish poet-insurgent;
E. Zhelehivskyi (1844 - 1885) - an outstanding Ukrainian linguist, founder of the "Prosvit" branch in the city;
K. Swidzinski (1842 - 1877) - Polish poet, member of the Paris Commune.
