During the Battle of Uman, the 6th and 12th Soviet Armies were surrounded. In August 1941, Soviet prisoners of war from the 6th and 12th Armies from the Zelena Brama tract, located near the village of Pidvysoke, Novoarkhangelskyi district, Kirovohrad region, were sent to the 16th Army transfer point, known as the Uman Pit, which was created by the Nazis near the city of Uman, Kyiv (now Cherkasy) region. In their archival documents, the Germans called it "Stalag 349." It was one of the first Nazi concentration camps on the territory of Ukraine. Thousands of prisoners found their last earthly resting place in the land of Uman.
