The memorial sign was erected in honor of the first chronicle mention of Poltava and is located on the Cathedral Square next to the White Gazebo and the Ivan Kotliarevskyi estate.
The first known written mention of Poltava dates back to 1174 A.D. It is contained in the Ipatiev Chronicle, in the story of Prince Ihor Sviatoslavovych's campaign against the Polovtsians. For a long time, this date was considered the beginning of Poltava's history, but in 1999, archaeological excavations in the historic center of the city revealed the remains of a settlement founded by the Slavic Northmen in the 9th century.
According to legend, the treasures of the Poltava Regiment are hidden under the stone.
