After several days of fierce fighting, the border guards were forced to retreat to the northeastern outskirts of the city, just to Vasylenko's field. In the battles for Lubny, the Chief of Staff of the 94th Border Regiment, Major P. Deinego, the commander of the rifle battalion, Captain M. Mirziashvili, and dozens of officers and soldiers were killed. At the cost of their own lives, they enabled their comrades to escape from the encirclement.
