On October 10, 1941, the city was occupied by German-Nazi invaders. From the first days of the occupation, the Nazi command began to carry out mass destruction of civilians and prisoners of war. In the premises of school No. 5 and the former dormitory of the plant, there was a camp of prisoners of war of the Red Army, in which there were up to 7,000 people. As a result of the regime established in the camp during its existence, more than 2,000 people died from cold, hunger, diseases and shootings.
