Vasyl Opanasovych Melezhyk was a Red Army soldier of the Workers‘ and Peasants’ Red Army, a participant of the Great Patriotic War, and a Hero of the Soviet Union. On 5 December 1944, a group of Soviet soldiers, including Melezhyk, crossed the Danube near the village of Mariakhaza, 3 kilometres north of the town of Ercea, and seized a bridgehead on the opposite bank. In those battles, Melezhyk personally destroyed 2 vehicles and a large number of enemy soldiers and officers, and took an active part in repelling five German counterattacks. When he was surrounded by a group of enemy soldiers, Melezhyk killed three of them and captured two more. On 3 March 1945, Melezhyk was killed in action.
