The monument was erected with voluntary contributions to mark the 100th anniversary of the writer's birth. However, due to the First World War, the authorities ordered to stop fundraising. According to the author's estimates, the cost of the monument was 25-27 thousand rubles. By November 1, 1913, 29,258 rubles 25 kopecks of donations had been collected by subscription for the construction of the monument to Gogol. The project of the monument to N.V. Gogol was created by L.V. Posen for free and presented to the city in 1915. For almost two decades, the monument was in storage. Only in 1934, during the celebration of the 125th anniversary of the writer's birth, the monument was erected. The bronze sculpture of the writer is mounted on a high pedestal, with a pencil in his right hand, a notebook in his left, and a cape on his shoulder. The monument is located near the theater, which is named after Gogol.
